Hollywood Blvd. from Vine to Gower was closed to traffic Wednesday, April 22 and all day on Thursday for a free Depeche Mode concert. The concert wasn’t slated to start until 8:30 p.m., but ardent fans began camping out the night before to stake their spot in the front of the line. A new generation of black-clad youths lined the closed-off streets waiting expectantly for their first DM concert. The seven-song set thrilled and excited old and new fans alike. Interestingly enough, many of the fans in line weren’t even born during the band’s heyday in the ’80s.
It was a commercial affair, with both Rogue Pictures and W Hollywood Residence co-sponsoring the event that snarled traffic in the busiest segment of town for nearly two days.
Was it worth it? Will another expensive development like the W in this down economy really revitalize Hollywood? If the estimated 10,000 fans were any indication, I would say maybe yes.
I like your post. Good stuff. Keep them coming
